MallasLabra: Sepikka + Kas Kan

MallasLabra is a new collaboration club between Hailuoto Brewery’s Mallassauna and Oulu Urban Culture's Kulttuurilaboratorio! The concert will be in the lab area, and Mallassauna will provide the bar services.

In Sepikka’s unique world, arriving at MallasLabra, there’s a deep connection with animals, a celebration of friendship, and sharp insights into people and our time. A strong theme is frustration with society’s focus on efficiency and the exploitation of nature.

Behind the artist name Sepikka is Joni Seppänen, who gained many awards and nominations after releasing his debut album in 2021. This will be his last concert before taking a break from performing, and it will be held at the Kulttuurilaboratorio.

Sepikka’s music is big yet delicate, like a gusty storm. Seppänen’s pop seems inspired by natural forces like currents and silence. He blends wide, raw band sounds with sampling and classical instruments. Strings, horns, and pianos play powerfully and sometimes unpredictably. On the surface, Sepikka feels gentle and playful, but the calm can suddenly turn into an intense, unpredictable sprint through frosty, misty fields.

Sepikka’s debut album En kestä kylmää lailla ahvenen (2021) won Album of the Year at the Indie Awards. Soundi magazine named him Newcomer of the Year, and he got two nominations at the Emma Gala. The album was also shortlisted for the prestigious Nordic Music Prize.

Sepikka released his second album Ei koskaan rakkaudella in February 2024, and it has received glowing reviews.

Kas Kan is an alternative electronic music artist based in Rovaniemi. This year, she has released the singles Kun löydän tyhjyyteen tarkoituksen and Ote, both of which will be featured on her upcoming album En pelkää enää mitään, set to be released at the end of November. In her songs, Kas Kan projects her inner world in a personal tone. The lyrics explore themes of gender identity, the path to self-perception, depression, and the occasional difficulty of realizing one’s dreams.
